"When I get out of here... and I will... there's gonna be carnage."
—Cletus Kasady to Eddie Brock[src]

Cletus Kasady was a deranged and convicted serial killer who became the host of Carnage, a murderous symbiote that spawned from Venom.

Biography[]

Background[]

Cletus Kasady was born in Brooklyn to Louise Kasady and Roscoe Kasady. In his childhood, he was deeply abused by his mother, father, and grandmother, which eventually drove Cletus mad. He then killed his grandmother by pushing her down a flight of stairs and his mother by dropping an electric hairdryer in the bathtub while his mother was in it, fatally electrocuting her. Though he kill them for their mistreatment of him, he also killed his mother's dog. Soon after, he attempted to kill his father, but failed and was beaten within an inch of his life before being sent to St. Estes.

During his time at St. Estes Home for Boys, but he was later accused of burning down the orphanage which killed the disciplinarian administration. He also once pushed a girl in front of a bus for simply not agreeing to go after with him, killing her instantly.

In his adulthood, he became a notorious serial killer and was eventually arrested by the FBI and imprisoned at San Quentin State Prison. Prior to his incarceration, he embarked on a massacre in New York City and murdered 11 people on Ryker's Island. Following the massacre, Kasady dug up his mother's grave.

Cletus asked to be interviewed by journalist Eddie Brock. Once Eddie arrived. Cletus made it apparent to Eddie that once he intended to break out of prison and when he did, there would be "carnage".[1]

Venom: Let There Be Carnage[]

In 1996, a young Cletus Kasady watches helplessly as his love, Frances Barrison, is taken away from St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children to the Ravencroft Institute. [2]

In the present day, Mulligan, now a detective, contacts Eddie Brock to speak to Kasady, a serial killer who refuses to talk to anyone other than Brock. After the visit, Brock is able to figure out where Kasady has hidden the bodies of some of his missing victims, which gives him a huge career boost. Kasady, who is sentenced to lethal injection, invites Brock to attend his execution. However, Venom is provoked to attack Kasady via insults towards Brock. Kasady then bites Brock's hand, ingesting a small part of the symbiote in the process. [3]

On the night of Kasady's execution, a red symbiote emerged and blocked the injection. It introduces himself as Carnage and goes on a violent rampage through the prison, freeing inmates and killing the guards in the process. Kasady and Carnage then make a deal: Carnage will help Kasady break out Barrison from Ravencroft, and Kasady will help him eliminate Venom. Mulligan calls Brock and warns him about the situation. Meanwhile, Venom, wanting more freedom to eat people, has an argument with Brock and detaches from his body; and two go their separate ways. In Ravencroft, Kasady frees Barrison, and they travel to their old children's home to burn it down.[3]

Mulligan, now suspicious of Brock due to his interactions with Kasady before Carnage emerged, takes Brock to the police station. Brock refuses to answer Mulligan's questions and contacts Weying as his lawyer. Brock reveals that Venom has separated from him and needs the symbiote to fight Carnage together.[3]

Kasady eventually takes Mulligan hostage, and Barrison captures Anne Weying after failing to find Brock. Kasady and Barrison plan to get married at a cathedral, where Venom appears and fights Carnage. Barrison seemingly kills Mulligan with her sonic powers. But Venom struggles to overpower Carnage until he learns that he and Kasady are not as cohesiveas he previously though when Carnage attacks Barrison for using her powers. Venom provokes Barrison to use her powers again and her sonic blast causes both symbiotes to separate from their hosts as the cathedral collapses and a falling bell kills Barrison.[3]

Cletus survived the fall, but to his dismay, Venom ate Carnage before it could re-bond to him. As Venom picked the utterly defeated serial killer up, Cletus admitted that while he was a killer with or without the symbiote and that he really desired Eddie's friendship. Briefly retracting Venom from his face, Eddie apologized to Cletus before Venom angrily devoured the serial killer's head and contemptuously tossed his corpse aside.[4]

Personality[]

According to Eddie Brock's notes, Cletus Kasady is an insane, anti-social, homicidal maniac with a lust for destruction; and finds random bloodshed to be the path to freedom. Brock also speculated that Kasady has an Oedipus complex based on him unearthing his mother's grave. [4]

Cletus himself argued that his antisocial personality disorder stemmed from a history of abuse and bullying, and described himself as being vengeful but not insane. While bloodthirsty and more than willing to commit murder and cannibalism, Cletus seemed to genuinely love Frances Barrison and was outraged by the Carnage symbiote repeatedly trying to kill her, attempting to forcibly separate from it when it attacked her.

Powers and Abilities[]

Former Powers[]

  • Symbiotic Enhancement/Symbiotic Red Suit: Cletus had several superhuman attributes as the result of his merger with his symbiote, Carnage, which covered his body in blood-like red biomass. This increased his abilities, such as strength, durability, speed, agility and healing at superhuman levels along with the access to other powers it provided. Even in his normal state he can deploy the symbiote as a weapon. Moments prior to his death, Cletus lost the symbiote after Venom devoured it.[5]
    • Superhuman Strength: With the Carnage symbiote, Cletus was superhumanly strong. Kasady himself, however, has the strength of a regular human being.
    • Superhuman Mobility: With the Carnage symbiote, Cletus could move faster than the average human who engages moderate exercise and even has superhuman levels of agility far greater than regular humans.
    • Superhuman Durability: Cletus' bodily tissues are much more resistant to damage thanks to the presence of Carnage inside him, more so in his symbiotic suit where at that point, he is virtually immune to bullets and sharp weapons.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Though Cletus could still be injured, Carnage symbiote would immediately heal both it and its host at accelerated rate.
    • Aerokinesis: Using Carnage symbiote, Cletus could create powerful tornadoes and air currents by rapidly spinning.
    • Technopathy: Using Carnage symbiote, Cletus could hijack technology.
    • Haemokinetic Shapeshifting: Through his bonding with Carnage symbiote, Cletus gained the access to the full control over the symbiote's blood-like mass to the point of able to shape it into desired constructs and appendages.
      • Haemokinetic Symbiotic Suit Manifestation: Cletus could have Carnage symbiote formed around his human body into a malleable yet resilient sort of combat full-body suit that has eyes, claws, an extendable fanged mouth with a long prehensile tongue. Owing to peculiar circumstances of his symbiote's birth (being the very fragment of Venom that regenerated into an entire new symbiote upon exposure to Kasady's biomass and awakened by lethal injection in the middle of latter's execution), the transformation sequence involved Carnage rapidly manifested like rapidly growing tumor that warp Cletus' body from inside out as opposed of fluidly emerging and wrapping itself about him.
      • Haemokinetic Construct Creation: Cletus could utilize Carnage symbiote's ability to create bladed armaments such as swords, spikes, and darts can be used all at once.
      • Haemokinetic Camouflage Capabilities: Cletus could shape parts of Carnage that already emerged around his body into any type of clothing or garment that he wishes.
      • Haemokinetic Tentacle Extension: Cletus could also form tentacles out of Carnage symbiote's blood-like mass to bludgeon, impale, grab and smash or wrap and crush foes as well as quickly move from one place to the next and launch sharp projectiles as the form of long-range attack.

Former Weaknesses[]

Heat and Sonics: Like its progenitor, the Carnage symbiote was vulnerable to intense heat and sonics, in turn making Cletus weak to it as well - as Carnage's host. A prison alarm going off was enough to cause it extreme discomfort, and Cletus and the Carnage symbiote ultimately had a falling out over its desire to kill his lover Frances Barrison, whose sonic abilities posed a threat to it.
